Grammatische Analyse von Präposition-Substantiv-Sequenzen
(The Grammar of Preposition-Noun Sequences)

Non-canonic combinations of prepositions and countable singular nouns have not yet been comprehensively analyzed in theoretical and computational linguistics. Quite often, the combination is considered exceptional, as it violates the near-universal tendency that singular count nouns trigger the presence of a determiner. Yet the combinations are productive and compositional (cf. Dömges et al. 2007, Kiss 2006, 2007, 2008).
The project investigates the grammar of preposition-noun combinations in large corpora by enriching preposition-noun combinations and ordinary PPs manually and automatically with morphological, syntactic, and semantic annotations. The resulting data will be structured and analyzed by using techniques from annotation mining and exploratory data analysis.
The primary objective of the project is a grammatical description of preposition-noun combinations, which can be used in descriptive grammars and linguistic analyses in the areas of theoretical and computational linguistics. In addition, it will provide electronic resources, in particular a database for the countability preferences of German nouns, and specialized annotation schemata, e.g. for preposition senses.
